The Weebles are life-size bronze statues in Little Haven Beach, South Shields, UK. The sculpture consists of 22 statues by Juan Munoz. These two have been stuck in conversation since 1999.
I was late on the 9th July 2017, my mate Owen Lowery (of Snapshot Canvas) met me at Little Haven beach bringing some chips with him (thanks!). We ventured out to Groyne Lighthouse and made our way around the beach a bit and back to the Weebles (wobble and they don’t fall down). The conditions were not great and their was an Aurora alert too, but thick cloud made that impossible to see, followed by rain.
Herd Groyne was built in 1880’s to stop the sand from the beaches washing into the Tyne river. The Gyrone is essentially a small seawall. The lighthouse was built in 1882 and shows a series of coloured lights to visiting vessels allowing safe passage into the river when the lights were aligned. The light would show white if on-course, red if off to the left and green if off to the right.
There has been quite some good development in this area in the last years, notably more visitor parking and facilities, as well as some new LED lighting which also changes colours.
The area is well worth a visit in daytime and at night.
